Sugar Ransom Marks Tenth Anniversary of Debut Album, Mercy Hunt

As Sugar Ransom's debut solo album, Mercy Hunt celebrates its tenth anniversary, she reflects on a decade marked by profound personal and artistic growth.

“Looking back on Mercy Hunt after ten years, it's like reading an old diary– one that was published! Sometimes being a poet is the most embarrassing thing, but when I look back at this I’m still sincerely proud of it. The whole thing was crowdfunded and collaborative, so I can't take all the credit. So many people helped make this dream come true, and the dream endures. ”

The album was recorded over 11 days in January of 2013 at Kneeverland studio in Milwaukee, WI– on faith and several IOUs.

“I even did some demolition work with the sound engineer, Angel, at a property the producer was flipping to cover part of my studio time.” Sugar recalls.
Once recorded, a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo launched to pay those IOUs and press some CD’s. We reached our goal! Mercy Hunt was released on compact disc and digital download May 29, 2014. The band, then called “the violent mood swings” played the release show with Sugar Ransom, who then took her solo act on a Wisconsin tour in June, followed by a rustbelt tour in August. By then, Mercy Hunt had made the top 20 on WMSE for the week of August 14th, which led to a review by the College Music Journal (CMJ).
Sugar Ransom blends melancholy with elements of blues, western and folk. Steady drums, lush vocals and plenty of acoustic guitar make Mercy Hunt, this Milwaukee-based songstress’s newest offering, sound like a drive down a dusty Western road in a vintage convertible or a fading film reel of some long ago moment. -CMJ 2014
A lot has changed for Sarah (a.k.a Sugar Ransom) in the last ten years. These days, instead of splitting her time between St Petersburg, FL and Milwaukee, WI, she’s been putting roots down in Austin, TX. More recently, upheavals of the pandemic and personal trials brought profound revelations, including a reckoning with past trauma. In 2021, news of the death of a student at the very same ‘therapeutic’ boarding school where Sarah herself was confined as an adolescent shook her to the core and compelled intense retrospection to confront repressed memories.
“Going through all that, though, reliving that trauma. I realized how much I had been shoving down. Some of that is in the songs– I can hear it in You don’t live there anymore, The Willow, and Orphan Son, especially. So another reason to broadcast this album again after ten years is to reach the other survivors, especially now that I am aware there are so many of us. While singing these songs didn’t take away what had happened, they soothed me then and they were there again when I needed them. I made them because I needed them to be able to keep going. I think healing is like that - nonlinear, and even when we’re doing it in one moment we don’t realize what it will mean a million moments from now.”
As Sugar Ransom embraces the cyclical nature of her artistic journey, revisiting Mercy Hunt serves as a poignant reminder of resilience, growth, and the transformative power of music.
In commemoration of the album's anniversary, Sugar Ransom invites listeners to join a special listening party on Bandcamp on May 29th at 7 p.m. CST. For the entire month of May, Sugar Ransom’s social media will be releasing interviews with some of the folks who helped Mercy Hunt happen, the lore behind the song lyrics, and special edition merch surprises leading up to the listening party.
